How to Dispute a Hotel Charge (Wrong Folio, Hidden Fees & No-Shows)
Resort fees you never agreed to, a minibar you never touched, a no-show charge for a cancelled booking — hotel billing disputes are winnable if you document at checkout and follow the right escalation ladder.
Step 1 — Catch it at checkout (this is where disputes are won)
Always review your folio before you leave. Question every line you don't recognize on the spot and get adjustments made then — a corrected folio at checkout beats a dispute letter later. Photograph the final folio.
Step 2 — Dispute with the hotel in writing
Email the hotel's front office or general manager (not just the brand's 800 number): "I was charged [$X] for [item] on [date], confirmation [number]. [It was not disclosed at booking / I did not use it / my reservation was cancelled on [date]]. Please reverse the charge and confirm in writing." Attach your folio photo and booking confirmation. Give them 7–10 days.
Step 3 — The call script
"Hi, I'm calling about a charge of [$X] on [date], confirmation [number]. [Describe the error.] I'd like it reversed — I have my folio and booking confirmation showing [the discrepancy]."
"It wasn't in the total price I agreed to at booking, and I have the confirmation showing [amount]. Undisclosed fees aren't enforceable — please reverse it."
"My cancellation confirmation [number] is dated [before the deadline]. The no-show charge shouldn't apply — please reverse it."
Step 4 — The chargeback backstop
Under the Fair Credit Billing Act, you can dispute billing errors with your card issuer — generally within 60 days of the statement showing the charge. Provide: booking confirmation, cancellation proof or folio, and your written dispute with the hotel. Card issuers side with documented consumers far more often than you'd expect.
